While I sat on a ferry, a bit outside of Ho Chi Minh City, a girl came up to me and expressed her amazement about meeting a foreigner in this particular place. She was so amazed, that later, she would even come to the airport extremely early in the morning to wave goodbye to me. She offered to show me her home, where I met her mother, and invited me to a wedding, which would take place a few days later. I arrived with a friend at the wedding, this time riding my own motorcycle. It was the 31st of December, and although the Vietnamese celebrate Chinese New Year, the “Western” New Year has become a big and popular thing there lately.
The Vietnamese had the unexpected habit of chugging a whole half-litre pint of beer. And since being a foreigner draws a lot of attention, literally everyone wanted to empty a pint with me, ad fundum. I must say, things got out of hand very fast. I remember Dutch songs through the microphone on stage with my friend, but from there my memory simply ends. And this all happened in the morning and the early afternoon. I could barely even stand on my feet during the big New Year celebration on the main square at midnight, and I went home almost instantly after the countdown. Click here for the video.
